VANCOUVER, British Columbia – On a day of upsets,
Tomy Linteau of Quebec City ousted #7 in the world Marcus
Robatsch of Austria 15-13 en route to his best result of the year finishing 16th in the
Peter Bakonyi Epee International on Saturday. Tomy went on to
battle half of the Chinese team starting with a victory over Lei Wang 15-12 followed by a tough loss to
China’s fencing legend Gang Zhao 9-4.
The next best Canadian result
came from Igor Tikhomirov of Toronto, Ont. finishing 29th defeating the 22nd seed
Roni Gold of the United States 15-3 in his first match and then losing to Yongjun Xie of China
15-8.
Other Canadians in the top 64 were Yann Bernard (43rd), Tars Bakos
(47th), Laurie Shong (54th), Vincent Pelletier
(55th), Charles St-Hilaire (61st), Jean-Sebastien Cyr (62nd) and Tigran Bajgoric (63rd).
The spotlight was stolen by US fencer Cody Mattern of Portland,
Ore. who upset two of the world's top-three epee fencers
winning the silver medal eventually losing 15-10 to Alfredo Rota of Italy, ranked fourth in the
world, in the final. Earlier Mattern beat Fabrice Jeannet, No. 2 in
the world, 15-13 in the quarter finals and Marcel Fischer of Switzerland, No.3
in the world, 15-14 in the semifinals. He also upset eighth-ranked
Peter Vanky of Sweden and eleventh-ranked Ulrich Robeiri of France in earlier
rounds. Marcus Fischer of Switzerland and Hugues Obry of France
took the bronze medal
