Montreal, May 29, 2010 - Hugues Boisvert-Simard became
the second Canadian épéeist ever to step onto the podium at the
Escrime Internationale de Montréal Saturday, after having earned a
bronze medal at the World Cup event, taking place at the Complexe
sportif Claude-Robillard.

Canada had previously been the sole Canadian able to achieve such
a feat, finishing third in 1997.
Today was the third time in his career that Boisvert-Simard was
able to grace the podium at a World Cup event. "I would have liked
to have headed more towards a gold than a bronze," the fencer
mentioned, referencing the silver medals he won in Bern,
Switzerland in 2009 and in Lisbon in 2010.
"Nonetheless, it's still more than I had hoped for today," he
carefully added, noting that just last Sunday at the Sydney World
Cup he finished in fifth place. "I am pretty close to mental shut
down!" he admitted, also mentioning that Escrime Internationale de
Montréal is his ninth competition since January.
Experienced Korean fencer Seung Gu Kim halted the Quebecois
athlete in the semi-finale. In Boisvert-Simard's first
international competition since the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games,
Kim bettered the Canadian with a score of 15-11.
Boisvert-Simard, who was leading 6-5 at the end of the first
period, fell victim to the Korean before the second period came to
a close. "I felt really good in the first period. I should have
waited a little bit more at the reprise of attack," admitted the
28 year-old athlete.
A member of the Club Estoc, currently 11th in the world
rankings, was graceful in defeat. "Kim's hand is four times as
fast as mine; Korean fencers, they are machines."
Boisvert-Simard defeated Peru's Ketziel Estrada 15-11 in his first
bout; he then won over France's Vivien Maya with 15-9, Poland's
Tomasz Motyka in 15-14, and Japan's Keisuke Sakamoto with a score
of 15-12.
The Favourite Quickly Eliminated
At his first World Cup since May 2009, Samuel
Gallagher-Pelletier was able to surprise Germany's Joerg
Fiedler - who is currently ranked second épéeist in the world and
was considered a tournament favourite - in the 64 table, with a
final score of 15-13.
"I was so incredibly nervous! I spent an hour on the Internet
Friday watching videos of him fencing," Gallagher-Pelletier
explained. "I said to myself that I had to have an effective
counter-attack, and that is exactly what I did.
It's funny because
during the match, I kept waiting for him to really open up on me.
He wasn't able to do it, and in the end, I think I was even able
to rattle him."
Gallagher-Pelletier was nevertheless beaten by Japan's Keisuke
Sakamoto in 15-13, in his next duel; the former Club Estoc member
finished in 32nd place.
A Challenging Grand Prix
In women's competitions, Canadian épéeists had a difficult day;
only Ainsley Switzer was able to win in the 64 table, but
then lost in the last moments of her final. Sherraine Schalm
and Joanna Guy were eliminated in their initial Grand Prix
matches.
Switzer, ranked 33rd in the world by the International Fencing
Federation (IFF), first won 15-14 against Romania's Loredana
Iordachioiu (ranked 96th). The Ajax, Ontario native then herself
was defeated 15-7 China's Mingfang Yin, (ranked 106th).
"Ainsley and her Chinese competitor have something of the same
style; so Ainsley had to try things that were a little different,"
explained Gabor Salomon, Canadian Fencing Master. "Yin also
has very good footwork, and she uses it to be imposing
physically."
Bronze medallist at the last Grand Prix in China, Schalm, 7th
ranked épéeist in the world, was beaten 15-4 by Italy's Cristiana
Cascioli (ranked 34th). "I've been fencing against her for 10
years, and I've never won. Her style is certainly effective in
battling me!"
"I rushed a bit too much today, but yet I wasn't able to adjust
my speed, either," added the Albertan, second in the world. "The
next time she and I fence together, I'm going to need to fence
differently than I do now."
Guy was eliminated 15-8 by Poland's Malgorzata Bereza.
Switzer, Schalm and Guy finished 26th, 35th and 48th respectively.
Sunday, they will participate in the World Cup team competition,
with the addition of Alberta's Kinga Kovacs. The Canadians will
face Japan in the 32 table.
Some of the best foil fencers will be competing Sunday at the
Escrime Internationale de Montréal; no less than fifteen Canadians
will take part.
Étienne Lalonde Turbide qualified for the main
competition table thanks to his international ranking;
François-Olivier David, Michael Dubois-Boudazza, Scott Dudiak,
Laurent Dumouchel, Julien Gaudreau-Pollender, Eamonn Gomez-Perales,
Nathan Morris, Anthony Prymack, Jean-François Sigouin, Alexander
Simmons, Nicolas Teisseire, Alecsandru Tudor, Maximilien Van
Haaster and David Webster earned their places Saturday.

Montréal, 29 mai 2010 - Hugues Boisvert-Simard est
devenu le deuxième épéiste du pays à monter sur le podium
d'Escrime Internationale de Montréal samedi, après avoir mis la
main sur une des deux médailles de bronze de la Coupe du monde
présentée au Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard.
Danek Nowosielski, directeur de la haute performance à
la fédération nationale, était le seul Canadien à avoir réussi une
telle performance, finissant aussi troisième en 1997.
C'était la troisième fois de sa carrière que Boisvert-Simard
montait sur un podium de Coupe du monde. " J'aurais aimé mieux
aller vers l'or que le bronze ", a-t-il cependant mentionné, en
faisant référence à ses médailles d'argent remportées à Berne en
2009 et à Lisbonne en 2010.
" C'est quand même plus que ce que j'espérais avant la
compétition ", a pris soin d'ajouter celui qui a fini cinquième à
la Coupe du monde de Sydney, en Australie, dimanche dernier. " Je
suis presqu'au bord du shut down mental ", a avoué celui qui en
était à sa neuvième sortie depuis janvier.
L'expérimenté Coréen Seung Gu Kim a freiné le Québécois en demi-finale.
À sa première compétition internationale depuis les Jeux
olympiques de Pékin, Kim l'a battu 15-11.
Boisvert-Simard, qui menait 6-5 au terme de la première période,
a été victime de la vitesse du Coréen, qui a tranché le débat
avant la fin de la deuxième reprise. " Je me sentais très bien en
première période. J'aurais dû l'attendre davantage à la reprise ",
a avoué l'athlète de 28 ans.
Le représentant du club Estoc, 11e au classement international, a
été élogieux envers l'éventuel gagnant de l'épreuve. " Sa main est
quatre fois plus rapide que la mienne. Les Coréens, ce sont des
machines. "
L'escrimeur de Québec a défait le Péruvien Ketziel Estrada
15-11 à son premier duel. Il a ensuite vaincu le Français Vivien
Maya 15-9, le Polonais Tomasz Motyka 15-14 et le Japonais Keisuke
Sakamoto 15-12.
Le favori rapidement éliminé
À sa première Coupe du monde depuis mai dernier, Samuel
Gallagher-Pelletier a de son côté surpris le deuxième épéiste
mondial et favori du tournoi, l'Allemand Joerg Fiedler, 15-13 dans
le tableau de 64.
" J'étais excessivement nerveux. J'ai passé une heure sur
Internet vendredi à regarder des vidéos de lui, a avoué le
Québécois. Je me disais que je devais être efficace en
contre-attaque et c'est ce que j'ai fait. "
" C'est drôle parce que, pendant tout le match, je m'attendais
à ce qu'il ouvre la machine, a-t-il poursuivi. Il ne l'a pas fait
et, à la fin, je pense que j'ai même réussi à le déstabiliser. "
Gallagher-Pelletier a cependant été battu 15-13 par le Japonais
Keisuke Sakamoto à son duel suivant. L'ancien membre du club Estoc
a terminé 32e.
Un Grand Prix relevé
Toujours à l'épée, la journée a été plus difficile pour les
Canadiennes. Seule Ainsley Switzer l'a emporté dans le
tableau de 64, avant de perdre dans les seizièmes de finale.
Sherraine Schalm et Joanna Guy se sont pour leur part
inclinées à leur premier match du Grand Prix.
Switzer, 33e au monde, a d'abord triomphé 15-14 contre la
Roumaine Loredana Iordachioiu, classée 96e. L'athlète d'Ajax, en
Ontario, a ensuite été défaite 15-7 par la Chinoise Mingfang Yin,
106e au classement de la Fédération internationale d'escrime
(FIE).
" Ainsley et la Chinoise ont un peu le même style. Elle a donc
dû essayer des choses plus inhabituelles ", a expliqué
l'entraîneur canadien maître d'armes Gabor Salomon. " La
Chinoise a également un très bon jeu de pieds et en impose de par
son physique. "
Médaillée de bronze au dernier Grand Prix en Chine, Schalm, 7e
épéiste mondiale, a été vaincue 15-4 par l'Italienne Cristiana
Cascioli, classée 34e. " Ça fait 10 ans que je l'affronte et je
n'ai encore jamais gagné contre elle. Son style la sert bien
contre moi. "
" Je me suis un peu trop précipitée aujourd'hui. Je n'ai pas su
m'adapter non plus, a souligné l'Albertaine, vice-championne du
monde. La prochaine fois que je la rencontrerai, je vais devoir
tirer d'une façon contraire à mes habitudes. "
Guy a quant à elle été éliminée 15-8 par la Polonaise
Malgorzata Bereza.
Switzer, Schalm et Guy ont terminé, dans l'ordre, aux 26e, 35e
et 48e rangs. Dimanche, elles participeront à la Coupe du monde
par équipe en compagnie de l'Albertaine Kinga Kovacs. Les
représentantes du pays se mesureront aux Japonaises dans le
tableau de 32.
Plusieurs des meilleurs fleurettistes au monde seront aussi en
vedette dimanche à Escrime Internationale de Montréal. Pas moins
de 15 Canadiens seront de la partie.
Si Étienne Lalonde Turbide a accédé au tableau principal
en raison de son classement international, François-Olivier
David, Michael Dubois-Boudazza, Scott Dudiak, Laurent Dumouchel,
