To the delight of the French crowd Maureen Nisima won the gold medal in Women's Epee in Paris on Tuesday night by defeating Emese Szasz 15-10. Surrounded by press and fans after she said, "I am just proud to win this medal in my home country, I will never forget today."

Canadians Joanna Guy and Ainsley Switzer were unable to make it through the round of 64's. Joanna Guy, who has been recovering from an injury, was ahead for the first 2 periods leading 10-9 going into the last period, but ran out of gas and lost 10-15 to Tiffany Gerourdet of Switzerland. Ainsely Switzer lost her bout 7-15 to Xiaojuan Lou of China.

Gabor Salamon speaking of the Ainsley and Joanna's performance, "Ainsley was fencing a left handed fencer and she does not have a training partner with that - so that is something I will need to work with her on in the off season. In the case of Joanna - her fencing comes from strong legs and movement and due to her injury she ran out of steam at the end of the match resulting in the victory slipping away. Overall I am happy - everyone fenced well and this is something we can build on as we move into the next season."

Joanna Guy and Ainsley Switzer both moved through the qualification round on the first day of competition. Ainsley went 4-2 in her pool and then cruised through her DE 15-9. Joanna fenced a tough DE, winning a close bout 10-9 to move on to the 64's.

Joanne speaking of her close DE to make 64's, "I was up 10-6 and she started to rush and made 3 quick hits - I knew I just needed to calm myself down and slow the match down, letting the time to run out. I am just really excited to be fencing at the Grand Palais on Monday."

Ainsley commenting on her day "I had a couple of left-handed people in my pool that I was worried about that I beat relatively easily and then lost 2 bouts that I should have won making my day a little tougher than it should have been. However, I stayed focused and knew if I kept my fencing simple I would not have trouble with the Spaniard"

Daria, who had a good pool with 4 wins and 2 losses, was disappointed in her result but is looking forward to the next competition. She said, "I had a tough day - I need to learn from today - it is experience I can use for team next week"

Women's National Team coach Gabor Salamon said of the day "Obviously, I wanted them all to move through today, but I am still happy with how they all fenced. Ainsley fenced very well and moved on like she should. Joanna, considering it is her first world championships, did very well but will have a tough 64 bout. Daria, although she is disappointed in not making 64's, fought hard in her DE and Gabrielle just missed out on competing in DE's by a few hits. So overall it is a good start."

Au grand plaisir de la foule française, la tricolore Maureen Nisima a remporté la médaille d'or à l'épée féminine mardi soir à Paris en battant la Hongroise Emese Szasz 15 à 10. Après son match, entourée de journalistes et de supporteurs, elle a déclaré : "Je suis juste très fière d'avoir remporté ce titre chez moi à Paris, je n'oublierai jamais cette journée!"

Les Canadiennes Joanna Guy et Ainsley Switzer n'ont pas pu franchir le tableau de 64. Joanna Guy, qui revient de blessure, a mené pendant deux périodes, commençant la troisième période en avance 10 à 9, mais elle a manqué d'énergie à la fin du match, s'inclinant finalement 10-15 face à Tiffany Gerourdet, de Suisse. De son côté, Ainsely Switzer a perdu son combat 7-15 contre la Chinoise Xiao Juan Lou.

Gabor Salamon, entraîneur national, a commenté la performance d'Ainsley et celle de Joanna : "Ainsley tirait contre une gauchère, et elle n'a aucune partenaire d'entraînement qui soit gauchère. Il faut donc que nous travaillions ça pendant l'inter-saison. Mais dans l'ensemble, je suis satisfait. Elles ont toutes très bien tiré et c'est positif car nous pouvons bâtir là-dessus pour la saison prochaine."

Joanna Guy et Ainsley Switzer se sont toutes les deux qualifiées à l'issue du premier jour de compétition. Ainsley a fait 4 victoires et 2 défaites dans sa poule, puis écrasé son adversaire 15 à 9 en élimination directe. De son côté, Joanna a remporté un match très difficilement, par la faible marge de 10 à 9 pour accéder au tableau de 64.

Joanne commente ainsi sa courte victoire pour passer dans les 64 : "J'étais en avance 10 à 6 et elle a commencé à presser, si bien qu'elle m'a touché trois fois de suite assez rapidement. Mais je savais que je n'avais juste qu'à me calmer et à ralentir le combat, pour laisser le temps s'écouler. J'ai vraiment hâte de tirer au Grand Palais lundi."

Ainsley a commenté sa journée comme suit : "J'avais deux gauchères dans ma poule, et j'avais peur de ne pas gagner contre celle que je bats régulièrement. J'ai alors perdu deux matches que j'aurais du gagner, ce qui a rendu ma journée un peu plus difficile qu'elle aurait dû être. Mais j'ai réussi à rester concentrée et je savais qu'il me suffisait de faire une escrime simple pour que l'Espagnole ne me cause pas de problème."

Daria, qui a eu un bon résultat en poule avec 4 victoires et 2 défaites, était déçue de son résultat, mais elle a hâte de tirer sa prochaine compétition. Elle a déclaré : "J'ai eu une journée difficile, mais il faut que j'en tire les leçons. Je peux utiliser cette expérience pour m'améliorer pour l'épreuve par équipes de la semaine prochaine."

Gabor Salamon, entraîneur national de l'équipe d'épée féminine a analysé la journée comme suit : "Il est évident que j'espérais qu'elles allaient toutes se qualifier aujourd'hui, mais je suis satisfait de la manière dont elles ont tiré. Ainsley a très bien tiré et elle s'est qualifiée comme elle le devait. Et si on considère que Joanna en est à son premier Championnat du monde, elle s'est bien débrouillé. Mais elle va avoir un match difficile dans les 64. De son côté, Daria, est déçue de ne pas s'être qualifiée pour le tableau de 64, mais elle s'est bien battue en élimination directe. Et il n'a manqué que quelques petites touches à Gabrielle pour se qualifier pour l'élimination directe. Donc, dans l'ensemble, c'était un bon début."
