Woo Young Won of South Korea captured gold in men's sabre at the Grand Palais in Paris on Saturday night. All four Canadians competed in the top 64 with Vincent Courtier being Canada's top performer making the 32's by defeating his teammate Joseph Polossifakis 15-12 in the round of 64.

Vincent then faced the highly ranked Russian, Alexey Yakimenko in the round of 32 and lost his match 7-15. Of his day he said, "It was tough having to face my own teammate in the round of 64's as we train together all the time, but I was happy for the win. Alexey is a tough fencer and I was not aggressive enough and did not cycle my tactics fast enough to get an advantage."

Joseph speaking of fencing of such a large crowd, "It was an amazing experience to be fencing in front of a thousand of people - the entire event here is just amazing."

Nicolas Mayer lost 15-8 to German's Johannes Klebes. Speaking of his match, "I felt I had a good season - it is tough to have it end this way, but the experience will help me get better for next season and the Olympic cycle.

Mark Peros was defeated by the 5th ranked fencer in the world Italian Luigi Tarantino. Mark said, "I fell down 8-1 in the first half of the match and did not start fencing until the second half. The problem is that I did not start to fence until the second half and you cannot do that with someone like Tarantino and expect to win."

Continuing their excellent season the entire Men's Sabre team made it through the qualification round to fence at the Grand Palais on Saturday. Canadian Joseph Poloisfaaksi went perfect 6-0 and is ranked 17th overall going into the 64's, but will end up fencing his teammate Vincent Coutier. After discovering he would face his teammate he commented "Well at least we know one of us will make 32's. It is too bad because I felt we both fenced well, but that happens at these events."

Nicolas Mayer said of his teammates having to face each other "It is frustrating that Vincent and Joseph have to fence each other in the 64's, but other than that we had a great day in Paris. Now we need to focus on preparing mentally for our bouts."

High Performance Director Gerard Lauziere said of the Men's results "Own the Podium money allows these athletes to train full time and gives them the best chance to achieve these types of results."

Le Coréen du Sud Woo Young Won a remporté samedi soir le titre mondial au sabre masculin au Grand Palais de Paris. Les quatre Canadiens étaient qualifiés pour le tableau de 64, Vincent Courtier obtenant le meilleur résultat canadien en battant son coéquipier Joseph Polossifakis 15-12 dans le tableau de 64.

Vincent a ensuite affronté dans les 32 le Russe Alexey Yakimenko, bien classé en tête de série, et perdu le match 7 à 15. Commentant sa journée, Vincent a déclaré : "C'était vraiment dur de devoir tirer contre mon coéquipier dans les 64 car nous nous entraînons tout le temps ensemble. Mais je suis content d'avoir remporté le match. Alexey est un très bon tireur et je n'ai pas été assez agressif. De plus, je ne me suis pas adapté assez vite sur le plan tactique pour obtenir un avantage."

Joseph expliquait comment on se sent devant une si grosse foule : "Ça a été une expérience fantastique de tirer devant des milliers de supporteurs. Toute la compétition ici à Paris est exceptionnelle!"

De son côté, Nicolas Mayer s'est incliné 15-8 face à l'Allemand Johannes Klebes. Commentant son match, il a déclaré : "Je pense avoir eu une bonne saison. C'est dur de la terminer comme ça, mais cette expérience va m'aider à m'améliorer la saison prochaine et en vue des Jeux olympiques."

Mark Peros a été battu par l'Italien Luigi Tarantino, classé 5e au monde. Mark nous confie : "J'ai tiré de l'arrière 8 à 1 en première période du match, et je ne suis vraiment entré dans le match qu'en deuxième période, et ça a été le gros problème : on ne peut pas donner une telle avance à quelqu'un comme Tarantino et espérer l'emporter!"

En poursuivant sur sa lancée son excellente saison, l'équipe de sabre masculin s'est intégralement qualifiée lors des préliminaires. Nos quatre représentants seront donc présents samedi au Grand Palais. Le Canadien Joseph Polossifakis a présenté une fiche parfaite de 6-0, et il est classé 17e tête de série dans le tableau de 64. Malheureusement, il sera opposé à son coéquipier Vincent Couturier. Commentant le fait qu'il affrontera son ami, il précise : "Au moins, un de nous deux sera dans le tableau de 32. C'est dommage parce que nous avons bien tiré tous les deux, mais cela arrive parfois dans ce genre de compétition."

De son côté, Nicolas Mayer déplorait ce match fratricide, expliquant : "C'est frustrant que Vincent et Joseph doivent tirer l'un contre l'autre. Mais maintenant, il faut que nous nous préparions mentalement pour nos combats."

Gérard Lauzière, le directeur de la haute performance a commenté le bon résultat des sabreurs : "Les subventions du programme À nous le podium permettent à ces athlètes de s'entraîner à plein temps et leur donnent la chance d'obtenir ce type de résultats."
