Nikokai Novosjolov of Estonia overcame an overwhelming French crowd to beat France's Guthier Grumier 15-8 to win gold in men's Epee at the Fencing World Championships in Paris Monday night. All three Canadians that made it through the preliminaries were unable to crack the 64's. Igor Gantsevich started the day by losing 12-15 to Bas Verwijen of the Netherlands. After the match Igor said, "I was ahead the whole way, but made a mistake by pressing him at the end and he took the win away. It is a tough feeling; I understand how Roberto Luongo felt after letting in that goal in overtime a couple of years versus Chicago in the playoffs to lose the series."

Vincent Pelletier and Poland's Krysz Mikolajczak ended their match with a double hit allowing Krysz to slip by with the win 15-14. Vincent said, "I fenced well and it was just bad luck that we got a double hit for Kryzs to take the victory. Overall I am happy with my season and am looking forward to team event this weekend."

Hugues Simard-Boisvert was ranked in the top 16 and got a bye into the direction elimination round, but lost 2-15 to Polands Robert Andrezjuk. National team coach Gabor Salamon speaking of the Hugues and the team's overall performance, "Hugues is such a natural fencer - that his fencing depends on feeling and today he did not have it. He needs to put this today behind him and feel proud of what he accomplished this year. I felt that Vincent fenced a great bout and he was very close to moving on and the last couple of hits were just bad luck. Igor fenced brilliantly the first half of the match - but then lost his patience and rushed instead of waiting and setting up the actions he wanted like he was doing in the first two periods."

It was a grueling day for Men's Epee with over 150 entrants forcing both Vincent Pelletier and Igor Gantsevich to fence two DE's to qualify for Monday's top 64 direction elimination round. Only Tigran Bajgoric did not make it out of the qualification round. losing his first DE.

Vincent Pelletier said of the day, "I made my life a bit more complicated by losing my last bout in pools, forcing me to fence two DE's to make 64s, however, I felt good and beat both my opponents handily. Now my focus is on 64's - I think as a team one of us has a good shot at taking home a medal."

Tigran speaking of his day, "I am disappointed with not making it through - but it was a very competitive field. That said, I had a good season overall and with all of us fencing so well we will have a good shot to do well in team next week."

Igor Gantsevich speaking of his opponent he will face on Monday, "Honestly, I felt great all day but my 64 bout will be very tough and I will need to be fencing at the top of my game if I want to get by Bas and into the 32's."

Hugues Boisvert-Simard is ranked in the top 16 and automatically qualified for the second day of competition.

L'Estonien Nikokai Novosjolov a fait taire la foule française qui était contre lui en battant lundi soir le favori local, le Français Gauthier Grumier 15-8, pour remporter le titre mondial à l'épée masculine au Championnat du monde d'escrime à Paris. Les trois Canadiens qui avaient réussi à se qualifier pour le tableau de 64 n'ont pu franchir ce tour. Igor Gantsevich a commencé la journée en perdant 12 à 15 contre le Néerlandais Bas Verwijen. Après son match Igor a déclaré : "J'étais en avance pendant tout le combat, mais j'ai fait l'erreur de le presser à la fin, et il m'a volé la victoire. Ça a été dur à avaler. Je comprends maintenant comment se sentait Roberto Luongo après avoir accordé le but vainqueur en prolongation il y a quelques années contre Chicago en éliminatoires pour perdre la série."

Vincent Pelletier et le Polonais Krysz Mikolajczak ont fini leur match sur un coup double, ce qui donnait la victoire à Mikolajczak par 15 à 14. Vincent nous a confié : "J'ai bien tiré, mais j'ai joué de malchance sur la dernière touche quand Kryzs a réussi la double et a remporté la victoire. Mais dans l'ensemble, je suis satisfait de ma saison, et j'ai hâte à l'épreuve par équipes cette fin de semaine."

Hugues Simard-Boisvert était classé dans les 16 premiers, si bien qu'il avait un laissez-passer pour le tableau de 64. Mais il a perdu sur la marque de 2 à 15 face au Polonais Robert Andrezjuk. L'entraîneur de l'équipe nationale, Gabor Salamon, a commenté ainsi la performance de Hugues et celle de l'équipe : "Hugues est un tireur naturel. Cela signifie que son escrime dépend de comment il se sent, et aujourd'hui il ne l'avait pas. Il doit oublier la journée et être fier de ce qu'il a accompli cette année. Je pense que Vincent a fait un grand match, et il était très proche de se qualifier pour les 32. Les deux dernières touches ont été deux coups de malchance pour lui. Igor a tiré brillamment pendant la première partie du combat, mais il a perdu patience et il s'est précipité au lieu d'attendre et de préparer les actions qu'il voulait, comme il l'avait fait dans les deux premières périodes."

La journée a été très dure pour notre équipe d'épée masculine, car, étant donné qu'il y avait plus de 150 participants, Vincent Pelletier et Igor Gantsevich ont tous les deux dû tirer deux matches en élimination directe pour se qualifier pour le tableau de 64 de lundi. Seul Tigran Bajgoric n'a pas passé le tour de qualification, perdant son premier match d'ÉD.

Vincent Pelletier commente sa journée ainsi : "Je me suis un peu compliqué la vie en perdant mon dernier combat en poule, ce qui m'a obligé à tirer deux matches supplémentaires d'ÉD pour me qualifier pour les 64. Mais je me sentais bien et j'ai assez facilement battu mes deux adversaires. Je vais maintenant me concentrer sur le tableau de 64. Je pense que dans l'ensemble, quelqu'un de notre équipe a une bonne chance de revenir avec une médaille au cou."

Tigran analyse sa journée : "Je suis déçu de ne pas m'être qualifié, mais le niveau était très compétitif. Ceci dit, j'ai eu une bonne saison dans l'ensemble, et comme nous tirons tous très bien nous avons une bonne chance d'obtenir un bon résultat en équipe la semaine prochaine."

Igor Gantsevich parle de son adversaire de lundi : "Honnêtement, je me suis bien senti toute la journée aujourd'hui, mais je vais avoir un match très difficile dans les 64. Il faudra que je sois au top de ma forme si je veux battre Bas et me qualifier pour les 32."

Hugues Boisvert-Simard étant classé dans les 16 premiers mondiaux, il est directement qualifié pour le tableau de 64, soit le deuxième jour de compétition à l'épée masculine.
